Helping high school students plant roots and grow careers.
Helping Plant Roots and Build Tomorrow's Workforce
Natchitoches Parish’s work-based learning (WBL) program aims to connect high school students with local employers. Employers can help to provide meaningful internship/apprenticeship experiences that align with their coursework and career goals. These internships give students valuable real-world skills while helping businesses develop a skilled and adaptable workforce right here at home.
By partnering with local schools, Natchitoches employers play a key role in shaping the future workforce, creating career pathways for our youth, and meeting the needs of our community. Internships include a set number of work hours paired with classroom instruction and require financial compensation for students.

Legal Guidelines for Employing Minors
Louisiana law places certain restrictions on employing minors under 18. Employers should consult the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) or their attorney for specific legal questions.
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires payment of at least the federal minimum wage to eligible interns and regulates hours and job types to ensure minor safety.
Minors aged 14–17 must have a work permit (Employment Certificate) issued by LWC before starting work. Employers and interns complete an application, with parental consent required.
