Director of Nursing

Position Summary

The Director of Nursing fosters a culture of professional development, innovation while encouraging associate engagement and participation in shared governance in the promotion of quality safe care. Implements interdisciplinary care team rounds in the coordination of care with the provider team (MD/NP), case management, UR, and nursing team, and assures compliance with NRMC’s standards of nursing practice, regulatory requirements, accreditation, infection control principles, patient safety P&P and initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Responsible for the direction of the LECH nursing staff.

2. Responsible for creating work schedule for associates.

3. Assesses patient health needs with multidisciplinary care team in promoting coordination of care.

4. Ensures that care plans are complete with pain assessments and reassessments. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques and ensures all patients and families are educated regarding pain management.

5. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

6. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met and hospital policy is followed.

7. Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, CNO, and administrative team.

8. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.  Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.

9. Demonstrates ability to assist physicians with procedures.

10. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formulation of the plan of care.

11. Participate in nursing orientation, coordination of educational activities, onboarding of new associates as needed.

12. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

13. Maintains a good working relationship both within the departments and with other departments to provide a safe, clean, and secure environment.

14. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.

15. Responsible for overseeing performance improvement activities for the department. Documentation meets current standards and policies.

16. Provides education to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientation and in-service training for unit staff members. Participates in guidance and educational programs.

17. Performs management activities including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, termination and departmental staffing scheduling.

18. Maintains records pertinent to personnel and operation of the unit. Prepares reports, i.e., utilization, performance improvement, outcome data.

19. Participates in patient care conferences.

20. Provides leadership in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.

21. Completes performance evaluations for each staff member as required and on time.

22. Counsels associates utilizing disciplinary process as needed.

23. Provides for safety and comfort of patients, as well as the health and safety of staff.

24. Sets standards for facilities and equipment; monitors utilization of equipment and supplies.

25. Promotes open communication.

26. Provides assistance in the orientation to and practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and inter/external disaster plans and procedures.

27. Helps formulate patient care policy and procedures for organization.

28. Participates in quality assessment and improvement, taking appropriate actions as needed.

29. Facilitates patient care and sets standard for accurate reporting and recording of symptoms, reactions, and progress.

30. Organizes patient care and ensures continuity of care based on knowledge of patient needs.

31. Maintains clinical skills as needed for patient care and to support staff.

32. Serves as a clinical resource person.

33. Communicates with patient, significant others, and health professionals regarding care, providing mechanisms to assure participation in care planning.

34. Provides for professional growth and development of staff and establishes climate conducive to meeting educational needs and efforts of the unit.

35. Provides direction for patient/family education.

36. Interprets philosophy, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for all personnel, patients, and the public.

37. Cooperates with clinical instructors in planning, implementation, and evaluation of staff experience.

38. Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs; attends meetings, workshops, and conventions as appropriate.

39. Serves on committees as appropriate.

40. Is on-call for nursing and may work the floor if deemed necessary.

41. Willing to perform miscellaneous duties as deemed appropriate and when assigned by the Administrator.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervises all LECH nursing staff and Respiratory Therapy staff.

Requirements:

Required Education and Experience

1. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, baccalaureate degree 

2. Current State of Louisiana Registered Nurse Licensure.

3. Two to five years of clinical experience required; previous supervisory experience required. 

4. Current BCLS certification required.

5. Current ACLS certification required.

Preferred Education and Experience

1. Master’s degree in Nursing or Health Administration

2. Proven results in meeting organizational and unit goals

3. Demonstrated leadership ability and drive results
