Counselor
QUALIFICATIONS:

● Additional criteria as the Board may establish
REPORTS TO: Principal
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Plan appropriate school-wide guidance and counseling program in cooperation with the
total school staff
● Determine guidance and counseling program priorities
● Provide individual and group counseling and guidance
● Provide support to the staff in guidance and counseling areas as needed
● Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes, abilities, interests, and achievement
enabling them better to formulate appropriate vocational and educational plans
● Maintain appropriate and current information for students on educational opportunities,
careers, and personal-social development
● Assist students, when appropriate, in the selection of potential employment or
opportunities for educational development
● Supervise the preparation and processing of college, employment, and scholarship
applications when appropriate
● Work with referral agencies and staff both in and out of the school setting
● Serve as a resource consultant for parents, teachers, administrators, and community
agencies concerning the growth and development of students
● Assist students in completing Individual Graduation Plans
● Meet in weekly cluster meetings to evaluate and maintain school-wide counseling
program
● Maintain strength-of-diploma tracker to ensure all students have meaningful and
appropriate credentials
● Work closely with DESS department to provide DESS students with appropriate
educational goals, credentials, a course work
● Work closely with Career Compass (outside agencies)
● Provide an orientation program for all students entering the school for the first time
● Interpret the guidance program and guidance services to the community
● Supply data to assist in planning curricular offerings for the future
● Assist teachers by supplying student information data required to complete state and
local reports
● Create and maintains an office environment conducive to all aspects of guidance and
counseling services
● Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,
materials, and facilities
● Communicate with and relates to the entire school population
● Demonstrate a respect for all individuals by establishing working relationships with
colleagues, students, parents, and members of the community
● Participate in professional organizations or in-service training when feasible
● Maintain accurate and complete records as required by administrative regulations
● Exhibit appropriate standard usage in oral and written communication
● Exhibit a positive attitude by being supportive of and concerned with the total child,
interacting in a reasonable, fair, and impartial manner when dealing with students
● Maintain a positive professional appearance according to guidelines established by
Board policy
● Follow all appropriate state and local guidelines
● Complete a Personnel Self-Evaluation according to guidelines of the Natchitoches
Parish Personnel Evaluation Plan
● Develop Professional Growth plans according to local guidelines to strengthen or
enhance job performance

Resources (“Job-related injuries” include, but are not limited to, any accident or illness
which involves loss of consciousness, restriction of work motion, or medical treatment)
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 to 10.5 months
EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with
Natchitoches Parish School Board policy.
