Summer is in full swing at Natchitoches Parish Library (NPL), and NPL's Summer Reading Program (SRP) is offering amazing fun, educational, and enriching opportunities for patrons of all ages to enjoy. NPL will close for Juneteenth on Thursday, June 19th and reopen for regular hours Friday, June 20th. Looking ahead to next week, NPL will offer the following programs for children, teens, and adults.
Adults can sit down to a refreshing beverage at NPL's Mocktail Mixer from 6-7:30 PM, Tuesday, June 17. The menu of beverages to be served includes a Passionfruit Spritz, Coconut Lime Refresher, and a Ginger Mint Cooler. Along with their choice of beverages, patrons will be provided with a recipe booklet of 20 fun, non-alcoholic mocktails they can create at home with a variety of everyday ingredients. As with any celebratory libation, the secret ingredient is friendship, so sign up with a friend, make some new acquaintances, and treat your palate to the fizzy flavor of passionfruit, the subtle sweetness of coconut, or the soothing essence of ginger and mint.
Teens ages 13-17 are invited to express their creativity by painting a summertime scene of jellyfish drifting in an aquatic environment June 17th from 6-8 PM. In the featured scene, the serenity of the ocean's depths contrasts with the suspense created by the indifferent danger of cnidarian nettles. With a touch of artistic inspiration, this awe-inspiring scene can be hanging on your wall for friends and family to contemplate and admire.
The children's department will conduct its regularly scheduled storytime on Tuesday, June 17th at 10:30 am with a selection of books featuring the summer reading theme "Color Our World," which explores the impact of art and creativity on everyday experiences. The titles include A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni, Sky Color by Peter Reynolds, and Swatch: The Girl Who Loved Color by Julia Denos, and will be followed by paper bead bracelet making as a fun craft. Other activities for the week include Harvest of the Month conducted by LSU AgCenter on Tuesday, June 17th at 6 PM and the weekly Sprout program at 11:30 AM on Fridays. Both programs provide engaging educational activities and healthy meals or snacks for participating children. Further fun children's programs are planned for the Main Branch, Northeast Branch, and the Natchitoches Riverfront stage in the weeks following the Juneteenth Holiday.
As always, the heart of NPL's Summer Reading Program is for the library patrons of all ages to record their time spent reading in the Beanstack App. Patrons may sign up for a Beanstack account by visiting Natlib.org and clicking on the SRP rotating banner ad or by speaking to any member of library staff. Once an account is created, child and teen patrons may log their reading hours to earn weekly prizes, while adults are entered into weekly drawings for meeting their goals and will earn an NPL tote bag upon completion.
